Skunk #1
Skunk #1 is widely considered the 'Adam' of modern cannabis breeding. Developed in California in the 1970s and refined in the Netherlands, it was the first true breeding hybrid—stabilised, consistent, and perfect for the emerging indoor growing revolution. Its robust structure, high yield, and pungent aroma changed the industry forever.
Genetics & Lineage
Skunk #1 is a three-way cross of legendary landraces: Afghani Indica, Acapulco Gold, and Colombian Gold. Breeders (notably Sacred Seed Co.) spent years selecting plants to fix the best traits of each parent—high yield and fast flowering from the Afghani, and the uplifting high and complexity from the Sativas.
The result was a plant that bred 'true,' meaning seeds from Skunk #1 produced consistent offspring, a rarity at the time.
Effects & Characteristics
Skunk #1 delivers a balanced high that hits both the mind and body. It typically starts with an energetic, euphoric buzz before settling into a relaxed, comfortable physical state.
Its defining characteristic, however, is its smell. Pungent, earthy, and unmistakably 'skunky,' this terpene profile became so synonymous with potent cannabis that 'Skunk' is still used as a generic term for strong weed in the UK.
Historical Context
When Skunk #1 arrived in the Netherlands in the early 1980s, it revolutionised the Dutch approach to growing. It was the perfect plant for the new technique of indoor lighting, allowing year-round production of high-quality buds.
It won the first Cannabis Cup in 1988 and became the backbone of the entire Dutch seed industry. Virtually every 'Skunk' strain on a menu today tracks back to this single breeding project.
Why This Strain Still Matters
Skunk #1 is the genetic backbone of the modern cannabis market. From Cheese to Sour Diesel, countless famous strains contain Skunk genes. It proved that cannabis could be engineered for performance without sacrificing quality.
