Strain Profile

Colombian Gold

Colombian Gold is a classic landrace sativa that originated in the Santa Marta mountains of Colombia. Famous in the 1970s for its unique golden hue and sweet, skunky lemon aroma, it became one of the genetic pillars of modern cannabis. Without Colombian Gold, strains like Skunk #1 would not exist.

Genetics & Lineage

Colombian Gold is a pure sativa landrace. It evolved in the high-altitude, humid climate of Colombia's Caribbean coast. Its genetics are ancient and stable, developed over centuries of local cultivation before being discovered by Western smugglers in the 60s and 70s.

It is one of the three parents of the original Skunk #1 hybrid, meaning its DNA is present in a huge percentage of modern hybrid strains.

Effects & Characteristics

Known for a soaring, energetic high without the anxiety often associated with modern sativas. It provides a clear-headed, talkative buzz that is perfect for daytime use.

The aroma is a distinct mix of sweet lemon, lime, and pungent skunkiness—a profile that foreshadowed the 'gas' trends of later decades.

Historical Context

In the 70s, Colombian Gold was considered the premium choice over standard 'brick weed'. Its golden colour came from the traditional method of ring-barking the plant before harvest to cut off nutrients, forcing the leaves to die and turn gold in the sun.

Why This Strain Still Matters

It is a genetic cornerstone. As a parent of Skunk #1, Colombian Gold is effectively a grandparent to millions of plants grown today. Preserving these original genetics is crucial for future breeding.
