Haze (Original Haze)
Haze (often called Original Haze) is widely considered the most important sativa hybrid in history. Bred in California in the 1960s and 70s by the legendary "Haze Brothers" and stabilised by David Watson (Sam the Skunkman), it is a long-flowering, psychedelic polyhybrid that became the genetic foundation for nearly all top-tier sativas, including Super Silver Haze and Jack Herer.
Genetics & Lineage
Haze is a four-way cross of landrace sativas from around the world: Mexican, Colombian, Thai, and South Indian. This mix created a plant with vigorous growth and an incredibly long flowering time (often 12–14 weeks or more).
Because it was so difficult to grow and took so long to finish, it nearly went extinct in commercial markets until it was brought to the Netherlands, where breeders like Neville Schoenmakers used it to create more manageable hybrids.
Effects & Characteristics
The Haze high is legendary: producing a soaring, energetic, and sometimes trippy cerebral effect. It is pure mental energy, often with very little body load. The aroma is typically spicy, incense-like, and woody, with hints of citrus—a sharp contrast to the sweet or fruity profiles of modern strains.
Historical Context
Haze is the grandfather of the sativa world. While pure Haze is rarely seen on menus today due to its difficulty to grow, its genes are everywhere. It defined the sound and smell of the 70s counterculture in California before becoming the obsession of the Dutch seed bank boom in the 80s and 90s.
Why This Strain Still Matters
Without Haze, the modern sativa category would be almost empty. It represents the pinnacle of sativa breeding—uncompromising potency and effect, regardless of the effort required to grow it.
